If I remember correctly, it wasn't just a "stray shot" from the Falcon, it was one of the wingmen in the other tie fighters that clipped him sending him off.

@DevilsDreams - Not to mention, we see Vaders tie fighter stabilize as he flies away. And it has been that way since 77. No one ever thought Vader died.

Because no teenager ever whined about not getting to do what they wanted do rather than doing what they have to do. Also, the Vader/Obiwan fight worked just fine for back then. We can’t judge it based off of what the prequels, cartoons, and books gave us later.
